Every wedding vendor has their “hot take” in the industry. Here’s mine.
If you cannot afford/didn’t budget for a good videographer but you still want the movement and sounds from your day preserved, you’re better off investing in a higher end content creator. There’s a bit to unpack here, so stay with me. Let’s start with what I mean by “good videographer”.
I’m not talking about their storytelling skills or the quality of the equipment they use (although these are absolutely factors to consider). Everyone will have their own interpretation of what a good wedding film looks like because there are different styles, editing techniques, etc โย all of which appeal to different couples. Art is subjective.
What I’m referring to is the level of professionalism leading up to the wedding, as well as the day of; whether your videographer has second shot weddings or worked with mentors in the past; and how they approach filming. Beyond that, how will they make you feel on your day? This is a vendor (much like photographer or planner) who you will be spending a lot of time with. Are they intrusive or do they allow moments to unfold without interrupting? How do they collaborate with other vendors? Does it feel like you can be yourself around them? You don’t need to be BFFs with your media team, but you should feel as though they are there for more than a check. To be blunt, they should give a sh*t about you and be more focused on capturing your memories than building their own portfolio. After all, this is a business built on love. These are the questions you as a bride or groom should be asking during discovery calls when you’re considering hiring any media professional.
I say all this with a deep understanding that videography is incredibly different from content creation. And that’s another factor to keep in mind if you’re debating between one or the other. Of course, I recommend both ๐ and am happy to share my go-to recommendations for experienced video teams, including but not limited to Emily Schutz and Ezra Kim.
I’ve posted on Instagram about this before, but it’s worth repeating here. Your photographer is capturing images that will hang on the walls of your home. Your videographer is creating a film and depending on their deliverables, may capture full ceremony, speeches and dances for you. Content creation offers a different POV altogether. The experience is much like having one of your friends follow you around for the day to document the guest perspective. My style as an Ohio wedding content creator is much less focused on staging a scene or posing you to make your day look a certain way and more about documenting the raw, unfiltered, candid memories for you to look back on. So you can wake up the morning after your wedding and scroll through every moment โ the ones you remember vividly and the ones you may have blacked out for.
Your wedding goes by so unbelievably fast (I know you hear this all the time, but it’s true). And if you’re a nostalgic person, you know that being able to look back on the day quickly is a value add. That’s content creation, baby. I love editing a pretty video for you to post on socials or share with loved ones, but more than anything, I love giving you the ability to look back on the raw footage. That’s where the magic is.
